Side Effects of High Intake of Phosphorus

An elevated concentration of phosphate in the bloodstream is referred to as hyperphosphatemia. This condition can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness and pain in the joints and muscles. Individuals with high phosphorus levels may also experience itching and redness in the eyes. Other potential complications include nausea, constipation, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Deficiency of Phosphorus

A deficiency in phosphorus, known as hypophosphatemia, results in decreased energy levels, leading to fatigue, muscle weakness, and pain in bones and joints. Insufficient phosphorus can contribute to conditions such as anorexia, obesity, and both physical and mental exhaustion. It may also result in nervous system disorders, arthritis, tooth decay, and rickets.

  • 7-12 months: 275 mg

Children

  • 1-3 years: 460 mg
  • 4-8 years: 500 mg
  • 9-18 years: 1250 mg

Adults

  • Individuals aged 19 years and older require 700 mg of phosphorus.
  • Pregnant and lactating women also require 700 mg.
