Leucorrhoea

Leucorrhoea refers to an abnormal white, yellowish, or greenish vaginal discharge that can vary in consistency and odour. It is a symptom rather than a disease and often indicates an underlying infection or imbalance.

Definition

Leucorrhoea is excessive vaginal discharge caused by infections, hormonal imbalances, or physiological factors.

Leucorrhoea is referred to as "Shweta Pradara" in Ayurveda, meaning "white discharge." It is considered an imbalance of Kapha Dosha and is influenced by poor digestion, improper lifestyle, or infections.

Causes of Leucoderma

Physiological: Normal discharge during ovulation, pregnancy, or sexual arousal.

Pathological:

  • Vaginal or cervical infections (e.g., bacterial vaginosis, fungal infections like candidiasis, STIs such as trichomoniasis).
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., puberty, pregnancy, menopause).
  • Poor hygiene or allergic reactions to products.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
  • Agnimandya (weak digestion) leading to Ama (toxins).
  • Kapha aggravation due to excessive consumption of cold, heavy, or sweet foods.
  • Stress or suppressed emotions.
  • Overexertion or sexual overindulgence.

Symptoms

  • Foul-smelling discharge.
  • Itching or irritation in the vaginal area.
  • Pain during urination or intercourse.
  • Lower abdominal pain in severe cases.
