Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The pain can range from mild to severe, and the condition often mimics a urinary tract infection (UTI) but without any bacterial infection.

 

Causes of Interstitial Cystitis

The exact cause is unknown, but several factors may contribute:

  • Bladder Lining Damage: A defect in the bladder's protective layer, allowing irritants in urine to inflame the bladder wall.
  • Autoimmune Response: The immune system mistakenly attacks bladder tissues.
  • Nerve Sensitivity: Overactive nerves in the bladder causing pain signals.
  • Infections: Frequent UTIs might trigger the condition.
  • Stress: Emotional stress may worsen symptoms.
  • Genetics: Family history may increase risk.

Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis

  • Chronic Pelvic Pain: Persistent discomfort in the bladder or pelvic region.
  • Urgency and Frequency: Feeling a constant need to urinate, often in small amounts.
  • Pain During Urination: Burning or discomfort.
  • Pain During Intercourse: Pain or discomfort during or after sexual activity.
  • Flare-ups: Symptoms can worsen during stress, menstruation, or certain foods.

Interstitial Cystitis often starts in middle age. It is more common in women and also in patients with conditions like fibromyalgia or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Ayurvedic Perspective on Interstitial Cystitis

In Ayurveda, IC can be linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism in the body. Excessive Pitta aggravates the urinary tract, leading to inflammation and irritation. Factors like a Pitta-aggravating diet (spicy, acidic foods), stress, and dehydration contribute to the condition.

It may also involve imbalances in Apana Vata (subtype of Vata dosha governing the pelvic area), leading to disrupted urination and pain.

  • Basti (Medicated Enemas): Helps balance Vata and Pitta in the pelvic area.

  • Yoga Poses: Child's pose, Butterfly pose, and Supine twist.
  • Pranayama: Cooling breath techniques like Sheetali and Sheetkari.
