What is Flu?

The flu, short for influenza, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by influenza viruses. It primarily affects the respiratory system, including the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu is different from a common cold due to its sudden onset, severity, and potential complications like pneumonia.

Types of Influenza Viruses

  • Influenza A: Can cause pandemics; infects humans and animals.
  • Influenza B: Milder than Type A, only infects humans.
  • Influenza C: Causes mild respiratory symptoms.
  • Influenza D: Primarily affects cattle.

Symptoms

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea (less common, mostly in children)

Causes

The flu spreads through:

  • Respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
  • Contact with contaminated surfaces.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Flu

In Ayurveda, the flu is understood as an imbalance of Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) due to seasonal changes, weakened immunity (Ojas), and improper digestion (Agni). It is often categorized under respiratory ailments like Vata-Kaphaja Jwara (fever due to Vata and Kapha imbalance).
