Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) refers to a group of lung disorders that cause inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the interstitial space in the lungs. The interstitial space is the tissue and structures around the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs, including the blood vessels and the connective tissue. These conditions affect the lung's ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream, leading to difficulty breathing, coughing, and a decline in lung function over time.
