What is Common Cold?

The common cold is a mild viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, affecting the nose and throat. It is highly contagious but usually harmless, resolving within 7–10 days.

  • Most commonly caused by rhinoviruses (30-50%).
  • Other viruses: coronaviruses, adenoviruses, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Modes of Transmission:
  • Direct contact: Touching infected surfaces or hands.
  • Airborne droplets: From sneezing, coughing, or talking.
Risk Factors:
  • Weakened immune system.
  • Seasonal changes (common in colder months).
  • Close contact with infected individuals.

Symptoms

  • Sneezing.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Sore throat.
  • Mild cough.
  • Fatigue or tiredness.
  • Low-grade fever (sometimes).
  • Watery eyes.
  • Mild headache or body ache.

Complications

  • Sinusitis: Infection of the sinuses.
  • Middle ear infection (otitis media): Common in children.
  • Bronchitis: Prolonged cough leading to lung irritation.
  • Asthma flare-ups: For those with asthma.
  • Secondary bacterial infections: Requiring antibiotics.

Ayurvedic Perspective

The common cold is referred to as "Pratishyaya" in Ayurveda. It is caused by an imbalance in the doshas, primarily:

  • Vata: Causes dryness in the respiratory tract.
  • Kapha: Leads to mucus build-up and congestion.
  • Aggravation is often triggered by exposure to cold, improper diet, or seasonal changes.

Ayurvedic theory views the common cold as the result of weakened Agni (digestive fire), reducing immunity and allowing toxins (Ama) to accumulate.
