Back pain, also known as backache is a common reason for absence from work and for seeking medical treatment. It can be uncomfortable and debilitating. Back pain includes lower back pain, middle back pain, upper back pain or low back pain with sciatica. It can result from injury, activity and some medical conditions. Back pain can affect people of any age, for different reasons. As people get older, the chance of developing lower back pain increases, due to factors such as previous occupation and degenerative disk disease.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Back pain can have many symptoms, including:

  •   Weight loss
  •   Inflammation or swelling on the back
  •   Fever
  •   Pain down the legs
  •   Pain that reaches below the knees
  •   Urinary incontinence
  •   Fecal incontinence, or loss of control over bowel movements
  •   Numbness around the anus, buttocks and genitals.

Useful Home Remedies


Gingerol is one of the active components of ginger. It is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

How to used it:
  1.   Steep the ginger in a cup of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2.   Add honey for taste and consume before it turns cold.
  3.   Alternatively, you can use ginger oil to massage your back.


Garlic contains components like selenium and capsaicin, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The combined effects of these garlic compounds can be very helpful in treating back pain.

How to used it:
  1.   Crush the garlic cloves to form a fine paste.
  2.   Apply this paste to the affected area and cover it with a clean towel.
  3.   Leave it on for 25 to 30 minutes and then wipe it off with a wet piece of cloth.
  4.   Alternatively, you can also chew on 2 to 3 cloves of garlic every morning.


Fenugreek is quite popular for its natural anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have also found it to be helpful in relieving pain. This makes fenugreek one of the best natural home remedies for back pain relief.

How to used it:
  1.   Take a teaspoon of fenugreek powder and add it to a glass of hot milk.
  2.   Consume this.
  3.   You can also add honey for flavor.


Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties and wide medicinal applications. These properties of turmeric can be used to treat and relieve back pain and its symptoms.

How to used it:
  1.   Mix a teaspoon of turmeric in a glass of hot milk.
  2.   Consume this mixture.

Epsom Salt Bath:

Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is anti-inflammatory due to its high magnesium content. Magnesium has also been found to be helpful in relieving pain

How to used it:
  1.   Add Epsom salt to a bucket of water.
  2.   Soak and relax in this water for 10 to 15 minutes.
