Amla also known as Indian Gooseberry, is a medium size deciduous plant that
is indigenous to India. The small, gooseberry-like fruits have a very sour taste and are a part of the Indian diet because of their ability to nourish health. These
small-but-mighty fruits are hand-collected in India either by climbing the tree or shaking the branches to catch the bounty.
Amla is one of the three fruits that are contained in Triphala. Amla is commonly known to contain vitamin C. Some sources even suggest that this fruit has one of
the highest known concentrations of vitamin C in the plant kingdom—twenty times that of an orange.1 More importantly, the vitamin C naturally found within the amla
fruit is stabilized by the presence of tannins, which help amla to maintain its vitamin content even through processing.
It grows to the height of 8 -18 meter. It has a crooked trunk and spreading branches. Its flower is yellow greenish in colour. The fruit is spherical pale yellow
with six vertical furrows. The mature fruits are hard and do not fall for the gentle touch. amla-plantThe average weight of the fruit is 60 -70 g. It has a gray bark
and reddish wood. Its leaves are feathery, linear oblong in shape and smell like lemon. Its wood is hard in texture. It wraps and splits when exposed in the Sun or in
the excessive heat.

Mixed forests. Drier forests. Dry open sparse forests or scrub, village groves at elevations of 200 - 2,300 metres in southern China.

Contraindications
Amla should be avoided in cases of high ama (toxicity) or when kapha is especially aggravated. It is also ill advised when individuals of a pitta-predominant
constitution have diarrhea. There is some evidence to suggest caution among individuals with an iron deficiency because amla can form chelates with iron and thus
reduce the amount of usable iron in the blood.Traditionally however, amla has been used to balance and build the blood.

Side effects of Amla
A night dose of amla before sleep can weaken the teeth in the same way that over-exposure to citrus fruits might, eroding tooth enamel; taken in this manner, amla may also irritate the throat. Being an edible fruit, there are no other known issues with amla, even at higher doses.
Precautions & Warnings:
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There isn't enough reliable information to know if Indian gooseberry is safe to use as medicine when pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and stick to food amounts.
- Bleeding disorders: Indian gooseberry might increase the risk of bleeding or bruising in some people. If you have a bleeding disorder, use Indian gooseberry with caution.
- Diabetes: Indian gooseberry might decrease blood sugar levels. Your diabetes medications might need to be adjusted by your healthcare provider.
- Liver disease: In theory, taking Indian gooseberry with ginger, Tinospora cordifolia, and Indian frankincense might make liver function worse in people with liver disease. But it's not known if taking Indian gooseberry alone can have these effects.
- Surgery: Indian gooseberry might increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery. Stop taking Indian gooseberry at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
