ABOUT CONJUNCTIVITIS


Conjunctivitis, also refer as pinkeye, is an inflammation or infection of the thin, clear tissue that lies over the white part of your eyeball and the inside of the eyelids. When small blood vessels in the conjunctiva become inflamed, they're more visible. This is what causes the whites of your eyes to appear reddish or pink.

It's a minor infection and although it might look bad, usually isn't serious. It is common in Children. It spreads rapidly in schools and day cares. But even teens and adults can get pinkeye.

TYPES OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

There Are Three Main Types of Conjunctivitis
  1.  Viral Conjunctivitis: It is the most common type of pink eye. This conjunctivitis are caused by a virus. It spreads rapidly through through direct or indirect contact with the liquid that drains from the eye of someone who's infected.This conjunctivitis causes burning, red eyes with a watery discharge.
  2.  Bacterial Conjunctivitis: This contagious Conjunctivitis results from an bacterial infection. In Bacterial Conjunctivitis, your eye become sore and red with lot of pus and mucus. It usually infect one eye but can show up in both.
  3.  Allergic conjunctivitis: It is another type of conjunctivitis that comes from an allergic reaction to something. It is not contagious. People with Allergic conjunctivitis might feel intense itching, tearing and inflammation of the eyes with itchy, runny nose.

CAUSES OF CONJUNCTIVITIS


Infectious pinkeye can be results from many bacteria and viruses, responsible for colds and other infections such as ear infections, sinus infections, and sore throats. Sometimes it's caused due to bacteria of sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other possible cause may include:

  •  Allergies
  •  Viruses
  •  A chemical splash in the eye
  •  Bacteria
  •  A foreign object in the eye
  •  In newborns, a blocked tear duct

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?


The most common pink eye symptoms include:

  •  Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid
  •  Itchy eyes
  •  Swollen conjunctiva
  •  Burning eyes
  •  Blurred vision
  •  Being sensitive to light
  •  Swollen lymph nodes (often from a viral infection)
  •  Painful eyes
  •  Puffy eyelids

COMPLICATIONS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS


In both children and adults, pink eye can cause inflammation in the cornea that can affect vision. Prompt evaluation and treatment by your doctor for eye pain, a feeling that something is stuck in your eye (foreign body sensation), blurred vision or light sensitivity can reduce the risk of complications.

STOP CONJUNCIVITIS FROM SPREADING

Some conjunctivitis can spread from person to person. Practice good hygiene to control the spread of pink eye. For instance:

  •  Don't touch your eyes with your hands.
  •  Never share personal items such as washcloths, hand towels or tissues.
  •  Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoid rubbing or touching your eyes.
  •  Use a clean towel and washcloth daily.
  •  Keep a hand sanitizer nearby and use it frequently.
  •  Change your pillowcases often.
  •  Throw away your eye cosmetics, such as mascara.
  •  stay consistent in practicing good hygiene.
